How to Prevent Pests and Rodents in Your Storage Unit

A few simple steps can help keep insects and rodents away from your stored belongings. Clean items before packing, use sturdy containers, and avoid storing anything that could attract pests. If you find signs of an infestation, contact facility management promptly so they can assess the issue.

Before You Pack

Pests can hitch a ride on furniture, boxes, appliances, and other belongings. Before moving items into storage:

  • Clean and dry furniture, appliances, and outdoor equipment.
  • Check cushions, drawers, seams, and crevices for insects, eggs, or debris.
  • Make sure appliances are empty, clean, and completely dry.
  • Don’t pack food, pet food, birdseed, or anything perishable. Even sealed packages can attract pests.
  • Dispose of household trash instead of storing it.

Pack and Store Belongings Carefully

Use clean, sturdy containers with tight-fitting lids when practical. Cardboard boxes are useful, but they can soften in damp conditions and may provide material for rodents to chew or nest in. Avoid overfilling containers so they close securely.

Keep belongings neatly arranged and leave room to see along walls and around the unit. This makes it easier to spot signs of pests or moisture. Follow your facility’s rules for placing items inside the unit, and don’t store prohibited materials such as fuel, chemicals, or other hazardous items.

Check Your Unit from Time to Time

When you visit, look for damaged packaging, droppings, gnaw marks, nesting material, insects, or unusual odors. Also check for leaks or dampness, since moisture can damage belongings and create conditions pests may favor.

If you notice a gap, damaged door seal, or other issue with the unit, report it to management. Don’t try to repair the unit yourself.

What to Do If You Find Signs of Pests

If you find droppings, insects, gnawing, or nesting material, avoid touching or disturbing it. Don’t sweep or vacuum droppings, since this can stir particles into the air. Keep children and pets away, and contact facility management as soon as possible.

Tell management what you found, where you found it, and when you first noticed it. Photos can help document the issue if you can take them without disturbing the area. Ask how they would like you to proceed before removing belongings or cleaning the unit.

Avoid placing pesticides, traps, or rodent bait in the unit unless management specifically approves it. These products may affect neighboring units, belongings, or people, and facility rules may restrict their use. Management can inspect the area and explain the appropriate next steps.

Communicate with Facility Management

Prompt, clear communication helps management respond and check whether nearby areas may also be affected. Share specific details, such as the type of sign you found, its location, and whether you have noticed it before. If you see activity in a hallway or another shared area, report that too.

Pest prevention starts with clean, carefully packed belongings. Regular checks and early communication can help protect your items and give facility management a chance to address concerns quickly.
